Safety and Security Officer 1: SG - 12 / $36,413 - $45,131
Safety and Security Officer Trainee: Equated to SG - 9 / $30,783 - $38,421
Negotiating Unit - NYSCOPBA

Additional monies are paid for:

  • Pre-shift briefings.
  • $661 uniform allowance.
  • $662 annual security enforcement differential.
  • Some employees may be eligible for $584 annual inconvenience pay.
  • Employees in the New York City area receive an additional $1,545 annual location pay differential.
SHIFT/PASS DAYS: To be determined.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Safety and Security Officer 1:
Transfer Opportunity - Candidates must be permanent in this title and eligible for lateral transfer; OR be eligible for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service law.

Safety and Security Officer Trainee:
You must be reachable on the Civil Service Safety and Security Officer Trainee eligible list OR be eligible for transfer. You must also:

  • Pass a physical exam and meet specific medical standards.
  • Have a valid driver's license in New York State.
  • Be eligible for Peace Officer Status. This includes:
    • Pass a background investigation (conviction of a felony, misdemeanor or other violation of law may bar you from appointment).
    • May be required to be cleared through the New York State Child Abuse Registry.
    • Be a citizen of the United States, a resident of New York State, and at least age 18.

For retention and advancement to Safety and Security Officer 1:

Appointment Requirements: If you are appointed as a Safety and Security Officer Trainee, you must successfully complete a one-year training program, satisfactorily complete mandated Municipal Police Training Council training, other training mandated by law, rules and regulations, and maintain Peace Officer status.

70.1 Transfer Eligibility: You MAY be eligible for transfer to this position if you have one year of permanent service in one of the following titles:

  • Correction Officer
  • Developmental Aide
  • Developmental Aide Trainee
  • Developmental Disabilities Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, 2, and Trainee
  • Institution Safety Officer
  • Mental Health Therapy Aide
  • Mental Health Therapy Aide Trainee
  • Secure Care Treatment Aide 1 and 2
  • Security Hospital Treatment Assistant
  • Security Officer
  • Security Services Assistant 2
DUTIES:

As a Safety and Security Officer 1 / Safety and Security Officer Trainee, your duties will include:

  • Patrol and inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment to monitor and ensure environmental health.
  • Handle all safety and security issues.
  • Instruct employees and individuals about emergency fire and safety practices and procedures.
  • Prevent the endangerment of patients and individuals with disabilities, employees, visitors and property.
