Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist)

Duties:

As a Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist)), you will be assigned to the Mental Hygiene Law, Article 10 initiative regarding individuals who have committed sex offenses and who are approaching the end of their criminal sentence. Incumbents will review offender records, conduct actuarial risk assessments and clinical interviews, provide expert testimony in court, and generate reports to assist in the determination of whether civil commitment or intensive community supervision is appropriate for inmates who may be a danger to themselves or others. Incumbents will work as part of a clinical team and will interface with staff at OMH, and other State and local agency personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify for this position you must have:

A current New York State license* and registration to practice psychology and one year of pre or post-licensure experience in the clinical assessment or treatment of the sex offender population, where clinical assessment entails the use of diagnostic tools and techniques to make a determination/recommendation regarding the effectiveness of an overall treatment plan in reducing the likelihood of recidivism and/or harm, the assessment of treatment needs, the assessment of treatment progress, and/or the assessment of risk**;

Or

Current New York State license* and registration to practice psychology and two years of pre or post-licensure experience in the clinical assessment or treatment of a forensic population, where clinical assessment entails the use of diagnostic tools and techniques to make a determination/recommendation regarding the functional status of an individual, the effectiveness of an overall treatment plan in reducing the likelihood of recidivism and/or harm, the assessment of treatment needs and/or progress, and/or forensic assessments of individuals involved in the legal or criminal justice system**.

**Experience, as described, gained for those authorized to practice psychology under Article 153 of the New York State Education LawLeaving OMH site or the equivalent statute in other states is considered qualifying.

Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:

Prospective appointees will be investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees.
